STORY
The film begins with the same opening scene as The Conjuring, in 1968, where two young women and a young man who told Ed and Lorraine Warren about their experience with a doll called Annabelle, whom they believe to be haunted.
In 1967, John and Mia Form lived in Santa Monica and were awaiting the birth of their first child. John gave him the doll gift he was looking for with great difficulty. Mia loves it and puts it beside her doll collection. At night, Mia heard of a murder happening to their neighbor, the Higgins family. When Mia comes home and calls the police for her husband, she is attacked by a woman holding a doll and a man who is a friend of the woman. John and the police arrive home and kill the man while the woman kills himself. He left a bloody symbol drawn on the wall and then a drop of blood fell on the face of the doll he was holding. A news report says that the person is Annabelle Higgins and her boyfriend. They have killed their parents and they are the heresy of the followers of Ram, the cult of Satan.
Since the incident, Mia asked John to throw out Annabelle dolls. Later, after their house fire caused by the doll, Mia stumbles running away from the fire and into the hospital, Mia gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Leah. They then lived in a new apartment, in Pasadena. When Mia was tidying up the doll, she found a doll they had thrown away. A lot of strange things happened to Mia and her new baby. He then contacts a detective, who tells him about the Annabelle doll and the history of the devil worshiper who takes the soul of a person. Mia goes to a bookstore that is guarded by a woman named Evelyn and Evelyn then gives a book that is about haunting her and wanting her soul Leah. Evelyn told Mia that she had a daughter named Ruby around Mia who died in a car accident caused by Evelyn. He was so desperate and guilty and he wanted to try to kill himself. However, he claimed to have heard Ruby's voice telling him that it was not yet time.
John and Mia then contacted a priest of their church, Father Perez, who tried to take the doll with him to church. Perez was then attacked by Annabelle's ghost until it was injured, and the puppets disappeared. Perez warns John that the ghostly power of Annabelle's ghosts is desperate for Mia's soul. John then rushes to warn Mia. During another attack, Annabelle seems to be floating but, Mia sees a demon holding Annabelle in the air, implying that the doll itself has no power but is being driven and manipulated by the devil. Meanwhile, the arrival of the demon pushed Evelyn out of the apartment and there was a mocking sound when Mia took her baby. Mia tries to kill Annabelle and asks her if there is another way, and says that she can offer her his soul. John and Evelyn open the door to find Mia who is ready to jump out the window with Annabelle in her hands. John saved Mia from doing that; Evelyn picks up and holds Annabelle's doll and decides to make a sacrifice, knowing that this is her way to make up for Ruby's death. He jumped out of the window and died next to Annabelle. Leah was later found safe and sound in her bed.
Six months later, the Form family has moved on and has not seen Annabelle ever since. Elsewhere, there was a mother who bought Annabelle dolls as a gift for her son. And finally there is a text that says that the real Annabelle doll is now in a museum owned by Ed and Lorraine Warren and the doll is blessed by the priest twice a month to keep people safe from the crimes still in the doll.
